September is National Life Insurance Awareness Month

Fall weather is in the air and schools are back in session, we have left summer and have stepped into September.  Along with September comes National Life Insurance Awareness month.

According to the 2025 Insurance Barometer Study, conducted jointly by the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (LIMRA) and Life Happens, 51% of American adults say they have some sort of life insurance coverage (individual and/or group).  This is down from 63% in 2011.

Talking about Life Insurance is often not fun and is something that can be easily put off until a later day.  Most people feel that they have plenty of time to get their life insurance affairs in order or the coverage through their job is sufficient.  And, in many cases, they do have time to plan and do have coverage through work … until they do not.   As the old saying goes, yesterday was the best time to plant a tree.  The next best time is today.  September is our today and it is the perfect time to begin the process of analyzing your life insurance needs for those you love.

The optimal time to obtain life insurance is when you do not typically need it, which is usually when you are young and healthy.  That is also a reason why people do not purchase it when they are young and healthy … statistically, it is not needed.

Life insurance is generally much more affordable when you are young and healthy.  The cost of life insurance increases as you age, even if you are in good health.  If your health declines after you buy life insurance, your policy rates will stay the same.  Also, buying a life insurance policy when you are younger gives you more time to utilize it in your financial portfolio should you choose such options.

Life insurance is not about today.  It is about the future.  It is a way to plan ahead for the unexpected.  There is a statistic that is guaranteed.  That is that 100% of us will eventually pass away.  The only thing that is generally unexpected is when.

Take time this September to think about what your Life Insurance needs are.  Give your insurance agent a call and set up a time to discuss if you have in place what you need.  You may also be surprised that in some cases, adding a life insurance policy may create discounts on your other policies (Home insurance, Auto insurance, etc.).
